At Stir Tea, we are always interested in the conversations around tea and how it fits into everyday life.
A recent scientific review has brought together two familiar pleasures - a cup of tea and a square of dark chocolate.
What the Study Found
Researchers from the University of Surrey analysed 145 randomised controlled trials exploring flavanols, naturally occurring plant compounds found in tea, cocoa, apples and grapes. Their findings, published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, suggest that regular intake of flavanols was associated with modest reductions in blood pressure and improvements in blood vessel function, particularly among those with elevated readings.
Black and green teas are naturally rich in these compounds, as is dark chocolate with a high cocoa content. The researchers note that these foods are not a replacement for prescribed treatment, but may contribute beneficial plant compounds when enjoyed as part of a balanced diet.
It is a thoughtful reminder that simple daily rituals of a freshly brewed cup of your favourite black or green tea, accompanied by a small square of dark chocolate, can be both enjoyable and grounded in longstanding food traditions.
